At the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail, we provide an all-inclusive historical experience beginning with the founding of Mobile in 1702. No matter your race, ethnicity, or background, you are invited to immerse yourself in the rich and diverse cultural heritage of this region.

 

Our mission is to educate, preserve, and highlight the historic contributions of African Americans in Mobile. Through storytelling and site-based exploration, history comes alive—connecting past events with the places where they unfolded.

What You’ll Experience

Explore more than 44 historic sites that shaped the cultural and historical landscape of Mobile.

Highlights:

  • Africatown community, founded by survivors of the Clotilda

  • Old Plateau Graveyard, founded by Kossula (Cudjoe Lewis) and fellow survivors

  • UNESCO recognized site

  • Mobile County Training School, a historic Rosenwald School

  • Stone Street Baptist Church (est. 1806)

  • The story of Wallace Turnage and the Underground Railroad

  • Historic African American business districts and entrepreneurs
